Event Overview

Compliance issues including unfair dismissal and adverse action continue to be major issues for South African employers in 2023. Unfair dismissal claims can be costly and time consuming to employers. 
This workshop will allow participants to seamlessly navigate the legal aspects of dismissal and redundancy to avoid negative outcomes and ensure compliance. It will also discuss how you can design, managing and implementing a sound termination program.

Akona hold a B Com (Law) from Rhodes University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law from the University of Johannesburg, and values growth as well as academic advancement, hence is in the process of completing an MBA in Legal Leadership with the Robert Kennedy College (University of Cumbria). 

Akona also holds several certificates in international Labour Law in regions such as the UK, Europe, Russia and United States.

Akona has board level experience with a litigation case record that has never been below 85%  and is well-versed in matters that relate to employment law and pushing the innovation boundaries for agile solutions. This has culminated in being a highly rated Keynote Speaker for several organizations for over 6 years. 

Since 2022, Akona has also been brought on board as a 2U online tutor and assessor for the London School of Economics and Political Sciences for courses on Managing People and Leading Teams and Leadership and Change.

Bongani Khanyile Luthuli

Bongani Khanyile Luthuli

Bongani Luthuli is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and was duly admitted in 2014. He has right of appearance and appears in Labour Courts, High Courts and Magistrates Courts. He also appears frequently in dispute resolution forums such as the CCMA as well as various Bargaining Councils. He is is proudly mentored by Justice Edwin Cameron.

He graduated at the University of Johannesburg with an LLB degree and further obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Corporate Law specializing in the Companies Act 1998. He served his articles at Blakes Maphanga Attorneys. He passed his admission examination in 2013.

Bongani is a contributing analyst for The Thinker Magazine, a Pan African thought leadership publication which is edited by Dr Essop Pahad, his former political mentor. He publishes mainly on Labour Law and Industrial Relations.

He is a board member of Witkoppen Health and Welfare, Alberton Child Welfare (resigned in 2015), Bible League of Southern Africa as well as Guild Cottage Children Treatment Centre. He is a Director of Bongani Khanyile Attorneys, which he founded in October 2015. He already has been reported in Labour Litigation cases as winning counsel on a Restraint of Trade matter as well as numerous Review Applications and a number of High Court cases ranging from evictions to interdicts.

Bongani is a conference speaker and does get invited to be a panellist on labour issues. He is also a speaker at HR Laws conferences annually where he speaks on BCEA and LRA amendments as well as the SASLAW Annual Conferences. He is fast becoming a name recognized and respected as an authority in the area of labour law and industrial relations.

He chairs disciplinary hearings for his corporate clients. In that capacity, Bongani has never had his recommendation overturned by a CCMA Commissioner attesting to his astute handling of his processes as well as his conviction of the right to fair labour practices.

 Bongani regularly lectures the LLM Labour Law class at the University of Johannesburg as well as undergraduate classes at Eduvos. He is also a Moderator at Milpark College.

Lisa-Anne King

Lisa-Anne is a senior partner in our employment practice, has practiced at Fluxmans for over 22 years and heads up Fluxmans Human Resource Department. She has sat as an Acting Judge in the Labour Court and her and her status as one of South Africa’s leading corporate employment lawyers has been recognised by international publications and rating agencies such as best Lawyers.

Lisa-Anne regularly chairs and has been a keynote speaker at industry conferences and widely published and interviewed in respected online and print publications.

Lisa-Anne has extensive experience in large scale industrial action disputes and commercial transactions involving section 197 transfers and restraints of trade.

She understands the sensitivities surrounding issues that arise in the workplace with labour. She has experience in FAIS compliance and has been involved in a number of disputes before Financial Services Tribunal. She has acted as a mediator in various categories of disputes and has presided over matters in the capacity of Acting Judge of the Labour Court, chairperson and arbitrator in all forms of employment related matters.

As a result of her extensive experience and knowledge, Lisa-Anne is able to provide independent expert advice during trials, arbitrations and any other similar proceedings.

Lisa-Anne’s diverse practice merges employment law and human resources with best corporate commercial practices enabling her to provide value added strategic corporate employment guidance to commercial clients.
